Forest Service Voulenteer Expectations
As a volunteer, you'll commit to a minimum of five weekend days(Saturday/Sunday) assisting National Ski Patrollers at the Gold Lake Patrol Cabin, along with participating in at least three additional patrol community service projects, including the annual Ski Swap. Attendance at meetings(all meeting include trainings) and other key events is highly encouraged, ensuring you're engaged and well prepared for the season. Basic-level volunteers are always welcome to attend any and all patrol functions.
By joining, you’ll provide a valuable community service, sharpen your ski skills and boost your confidence.
National Ski Patrol Membership (NSP) optional
Some of our volunteers choose to take their commitment a step further by becoming members of the National Ski Patrol (NSP). Snowshoers and Skiers are eligible to join NSP through the Willamette Backcountry Patrol.
Earning an NSP Membership requires training in:
CPR Training – Life-saving skills for emergency situations
Outdoor Emergency Care – Advanced first aid and rescue skills in bucolic settings
Mountain Travel & Rescue – Winter wilderness survival, search and rescue procedures, injured skier evacuation, and navigation skill
Avalanche Awareness & Rescue – Recognizing avalanche hazards, safety protocols, and rescue techniques
*On average, it takes two snow seasons to complete the required training.
*Once complete, annual refreshers are required to maintain membership.
